The County Fire Marshal inspects businesses and some facilities for fire safety. We make sure they follow the Consolidated Fire Code.

We do inspections in:
- San Diego County Fire Protection District
- Deer Springs Fire Protection District
Types of buildings we inspect
- Facilities the state requires us to inspect. They include camps, schools, institutional facilities, residential care and other group homes.
- Business and commercial facilities
- Commercial construction
- Commercial fire protection systems
- California fire safety inspection requests
Inspections
We usually inspect these facilities once a year. In some cases, we will contact you and schedule the inspection. In some cases, the inspector will come without telling you first.
You need to make sure the inspector can get to any part of the building that needs inspection.
If the inspector finds things you need to correct, they will send you a report with the information. After you correct the issues, they will do a follow-up inspection.
Fees
The rate for an inspection or reinspection is $181.00 per hour. This is for inspection time and any administrative work. If we take less than an hour, we will pro-rate the fee.
Invoice
We will email an inspection invoice to the contact we have on record for the property. If we do not get a response to the email, we will send a paper copy to the address.
Payment
Pay by check or money order payable to the County of San Diego. Mail payment to:

Rental property responsibility
Tenants are responsible for the part of a commercial building they occupy. We will inspect common areas separately and send an invoice to the building contact. Common areas include:
- Lobbies
- Restrooms
- Mechanical rooms
- Parking lots
- Building exteriors
