San Diego County Fire reviews fire protection system plans for projects in these districts:

  • San Diego County Fire Protection District
  • Deer Springs Fire Protection District

San Diego County Fire Protection District includes Borrego Springs, Boulevard, Campo, Deerhorn Valley, De Luz, Descanso, Dulzura, Harbison Canyon, Intermountain, Jacumba, Jamul, Julian, Lake Morena, Mount Laguna, Ocotillo Wells, Otay Mesa, Palomar Mountain, Pine Valley, Potrero, Ramona, Ranchita, San Pasqual, Shelter Valley, Sunshine Summit and Warner Springs.

For other districts

If your project site is not in one of these districts, you need to submit your plans to the fire authority for your area.

Fire authorities for unincorporated San Diego County 

Types of plans and documents needed

Alternative Fire Suppression (AFS) Plans

  1. Provide 3 hard copies of AFS system drawings:
    • Provide Building Department Record ID Number (if applicable)
    • Manufacturer specification sheets
  2. A licensed California Fire Protection Engineer must review and approve the plans before County Fire reviews.

Emergency Responder Radio Coverage System (ERRCS) Plans

  1. Submit the following information to the Sheriff’s Department Wireless Services Division at rcsengineering@sdsheriff.gov to get RCS radio frequency ranges and donor site(s).
    • Full name of requestor
    • Company the requestor represents
    • Requestor’s phone number and email
    • Address and GPS coordinates of the building you are designing a DAS/BDA system for indoor coverage
  2. Provide 3 hard copies of each:
    • ERRCS system drawings. See developer guide CFA#505 (PDF) for more information.
    • Manufacturer specification sheets
  3. A licensed California Fire Protection Engineer must review and approve the plans before County Fire reviews.

Fire Alarm Plans

  1. Provide 3 hard copies of each item:
    • Fire alarm system drawings. Include installing contractor’s license type and number. We can accept California contractor’s license classification C-10.
    • Calculation sheets, if not provided on the system drawings.
    • Manufacturer specification sheets.
  2. A licensed California Fire Protection Engineer must review and approve the plans before County Fire reviews.

Fire Sprinkler Plans (Commercial)

  1. Provide 3 copies of each:
    • Fire sprinkler system drawings. Include installing contractor’s license type and number. We can accept California contractor’s license classification C-16.
    • Hydraulic calculation sheets
    • Manufacturer specific sheets
  2. A licensed California Fire Protection Engineer must review and approve the plans before County Fire reviews.

Fire Sprinkler Plans (Residential/NFPA 13D)

Provide 2 hard copies of each:

  • Fire sprinkler system drawings
  • 2-head hydraulic calculation sheets
  • Manufacturer specification sheets

Private Underground Fire Service Main Plans

  1. Provide 3 hard copies of each:
    • Underground fire service system drawings. See developer guides CFA #500, CFA #501, CFA #502, CFA #503, and CFA #504 for more information. Verify plan submittal requirements with the Building Department before you submit.
    • Hydraulic calculation sheets
    • Manufacturer specification sheets
  2. Plans must provide the following information, as applicable:
    • Codes and standards used to design system.
    • Building Department Record ID # (if applicable).
    • Detailed scope of work
    • Type of construction and occupancy per the California Building Code and types of fire suppression systems being installed for every building on-site.
    • A Fire Flow analysis for the site designed according to California Fire Code Appendices B & C.
    • Location, make, and model of cross-connection control device(s).
    • Installing contractor’s license type and number. We accept California contractor’s license classifications C-16, C-34, C-36 and General Engineering Contractors (A).
    • Details for fire hydrants, protection posts, FDCs, PIVs, and thrust blocks using the current editions of the SDCFPD CFA developer guides.
  3. A licensed California Fire Protection Engineer must review and approve the plans before County Fire reviews.
